BreastGene is a breast cancer genetic testing that examines, in detail, the DNA code for 10 genes which are known to cause an increased risk of breast cancer. It is performed on a saliva sample and if is always more informative if tested on a relative who has had breast cancer.

What is the difference between BreastGene and BRCA testing?

BRCA1 & BRCA2 genetic testing looks at only the genes BRCA1 & BRCA2 while BreastGene looks at 8 other genes as well as BRCA1 & BRCA2.

Why would I want to have BRCA1 & BRCA2 testing rather than BreastGene?

There are several reasons why someone might decide to have BRCA1 & BRCA2 genetic testing rather than BreastGene:

  • If a mutation has already been found in your family then you only need to have predictive BRCA testing to assess your breast cancer risk.

  • If you are Jewish you might decide to have the Jewish mutation test as your risk of a BRCA mutation may be higher than the risk of a different gene mutation.

  • You might not want to know if you have a mutation in one of the other genes. In addition, BreastGene uses state of the art technology and is based on new information so there is a greater chance of finding something that science is currently unable to explain (a variant).

A genetic counsellor can give you more information about the genes included on the BreastGene panel.

Why would I need Genetic counselling?

Only 5-10% of breast cancers are hereditary but if there is a family history of breast cancer, this can be a big worry. Deciding to have a genetic test is a big decision for any man or woman and one that needs careful consideration.

That’s why at BreastHealth UK we offer genetic counsellors to assist you prior to any testing. Our counsellors will provide you with all the information you need to make a decision and will help explain the process of genetic testing to you. Our counsellors will also be available once you have had your test to discuss your results and options.

See our video at the top of the page for more on the reasons why you might want to know whether you are at a higher risk.
