Breast Cancer

The human body is made up of billions of cells. There are natural systems within the body which regulate the formation, growth and death of the cells in a controlled way to produce and replace the body's tissue. If something disrupts this controlled process, the cells divide and develop without their normal control and form a lump called a tumour. Tumours are either benign or malignant – breast cancer is the name given to a malignant tumour located in the breast.

If the breast tumour is detected as soon as possible, then there is a good chance it can be treated successfully. The more the cancer has spread, the more difficult it is to treat. It is important to be breast aware and know what is normal for you. Click here for more information on Breast analysis

Breast Cancer Screening and Surviving Breast Cancer

Five-year survival rates for breast cancer have improved significantly over the last 20 years. This is largely due to increased awareness of breast cancer, the introduction of a national screening programme leading to earlier diagnosis, and the successes of breast cancer research, which have led to the improved treatments that are now available.

There is now strong evidence that breast screening using mammography leads to earlier breast cancer detection, which combined with earlier treatment leads to improved survival rates1. A recent research study has shown that the risk of death from breast cancer can be reduced by almost 50% by participating in a breast screening programme2. Mammography however will not pick up all breast cancers and as a result BreastHealth UK can offer clinical breast examination in addition to Digital Infrared BreastScan imaging.

BreastHealth UK Clinics offer:

  • Both mammography and Digital Infrared BreastScan (DIB), which is a safe, comfortable and non-invasive screening technology.
  • The BreastHealth Risk Assessment Test that takes into account genetic, medical and lifestyle factors.
  • Access to experienced genetic counsellors.
  • The latest genetic testing with fast results for women with a very strong family history of the disease. Click here for more information on genetic testing
